WHAT IS THE GLOBAL GATEWAY?

The Global Gateway is the EU’s contribution to narrowing the global investment gap worldwide. It is a strategy to boost smart, clean and secure links in digital, energy and transport sectors and to strengthen health, education and research systems across the world.

It is in line with the commitment of the G7 leaders from June 2021 to launch a values-driven, high-standard and transparent infrastructure partnership to meet global infrastructure development needs. The Global Gateway is also fully aligned with the UN’s Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the Paris Agreement.

Between 2021 and 2027, Team Europe will mobilise up to €300 billion of investments for sustainable and high-quality projects, taking into account the needs of partner countries and ensuring lasting benefits for local communities. This will allow EU’s partners to develop their societies and economies, but also create opportunities for the EU Member States’ private sector to invest and remain competitive, whilst ensuring the highest environmental and labour standards, as well as sound financial management.

GLOBAL GATEWAY PRINCIPLE

The Global Gateway partnership is based in 6 principles:

  • Democratic values and high standards
  • Good governance and transparency
  • Equal partnerships
  • Green and clean
  • Security focused
  • Catalysing private sector investment

KEY AREAS OF PARTNERSHIP

Digital sector: Through Global Gateway, the EU is strengthening connections between Europe and the world and helping partner countries address the digital divide and further integrate into the global digital ecosystem.

Climate and energy: Investing in both mitigation and climate resilience, as well as in clean energy, is a necessity but also a major economic opportunity in low- and middle-income countries.

Transport: Global Gateway will promote worldwide infrastructure investments that create sustainable, smart, resilient, inclusive and safe networks in all modes of transport.

Health: Global Gateway is strengthening healthcare capacities around the world, helping us to overcome diseases such as COVID-19, malaria, yellow fever, tuberculosis or HIV/AIDS.

Education and research: Global Gateway is investing in quality education, paying attention to the inclusion of vulnerable groups, and is working with partner countries to strengthen cooperation on research and innovation.
