DESCRIÇÃO

The Western Corridor is part of the main road network of Honduras and it is integrated into the International Mesoamerican Road Network. This corridor connects the second biggest city of the country, San Pedro Sula, in the north-western part of the country with the international border crossings with Guatemala and El Salvador, and with the Mayan ruins of Copán. The project comprises the rehabilitation, upgrading and road safety improvements of the Western Corridor.

RESULTADOS

By improving the availability, quality, safety and resilience to climate change of the road sections included in the project, a threefold result will be achieved:

1) Living conditions of the local communities in one of the poorest and most deprived regions in Honduras will be significantly improved through enhanced, uninterrupted and safer connectivity with the main population centers in the area and thus through ameliorated access to centralized social services.

2) Honduras regional integration will be fostered, both internally and internationally. The project will improve access to neighboring countries, enabling the growth and diversification of exports.

3) Sustainable socio-economic development based on tourism will be promoted in the project’s area of influence as a result of the increased affluence of tourists to one of the country’s most important tourist attractions (Copán Ruins).
