DESCRIPTION

This project aims at expanding and improving access to water and sanitation services for more than 200 000 people while enhancing sector governance in Bolivia. Furthermore, national policy for integrated water resources management is strengthened, reducing the impact of climate change on the most vulnerable segments of Bolivian society.

LACIF funds contribute to this initiative, which is implemented by AECID with the support of the IDB, by: carrying out quality and design studies, including essential aspects in the management of water resources, 

  • carrying out comprehensive master plans for water, sanitation and urban drainage, 
  • integrating water cycle management into urban planification schemes, 
  • building capacity in key urban institutions, 
  • making key improvements in water and sanitation services (energy efficiency, leak control, commercial management, operation and maintenance, user awareness and civil society involvement in management schemes), 
  • implementing a wastewater treatment plant as an Experimental and Training Center for the Altiplano as a model for future investments, research and training, 
  • and implementing a pilot on sustainable and water-sensitive drainage solutions.
RESULTS
  • Drinking water and sanitation coverage improved/expanded.

  • Sustainability in terms of operation, quality and continuity of the water and sanitation guaranteed on the basis of established quality and regulatory criteria.

  • Drinking water supply and sanitation services to be financially sustainable and affordable for the target groups.

  • Sectoral institutions improved through the development of national regulation, inter-institutional and integral planning and management of the sector and water resources.
