DESCRIPTION

The objective of this AFD-led project is to improve island-wide the quality and efficiency of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (Instituto Nacional de Recursos Hidráulicos - INRH) water and wastewater services and to increase the resilience to extreme climate events (hurricanes, droughts) of this entity, its associated companies, and, thereby, of the population as a whole. On the one hand, the project rehabilitates the Cuban infrastructure affected by Hurricane Irma in 2017, and on the other, it strengthens the capacities of the companies in charge of the operation and maintenance of these services.

RESULTS
  • Reconstruction and extension of 3 water supply systems of 3 municipalities affected by Irma: Matanzas, Varadero, Santa Lucia.
  • Rehabilitation of water and sanitation systems and reinforcement of operation and maintenance and works, concerning all water and sanitation services covering the Cuban territory and is structured around the rehabilitation / reinforcement of industrial assets (infrastructures) and operation assets (vehicles and equipment) particularly obsolete.
  • Improving the performance of water companies financing through technical assistance (TA) and investments related to capacity building and performance improvement of INRH water utilities, with the aim to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) volumes.
